Private 472422 Labour Corps

Hubert Cumberbirch was born on 18 May 1886 in Normanton, Yorkshire, England. He was the youngest son of John Cumberbirch and his wife Eliza Catherine nee Bond. By 1911 he was a studying for Holy Orders.


Hubert migrated from England to Canada aboard the RMS Megantic departing Liverpool on 12 April 1913.
Hubert Cumberbirch married Kate Walker 8 July 1915 at St Columba, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Kate was born in Nagasaki, Japan and was the daughter of Robert Neill Walker and his wife Sato nee Fukuda. Together they had:

  • Patricia Cumberbirch born about 1919 in Canada
  • Peter Roland Cumberbirch born 15 January 1923 in Canada. Peter would become Flight Lieutenant 416 AW(F) Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force by 1957.
  • Robert Cumberbirch born in Canada

Hubert and Kate Cumberbirch travelled to York House, Normanton, Yorkshire aboard the RMS Cameronia arriving at Liverpool on 20 October 1915. Hubert Cumberbirch was a teacher aged 29 and Kate Cumberbirch was a Housewife aged  28.

Hubert joined the army as Gunner 307546 in the Royal Garrison Artillery but by the end of his engagement he was Private 472422 in the Labour Corps. Hubert died 24 July 1975 at Sandringham Private Hospital, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and he was cremated 28 July 1975 at Royal Oak Crematorium, Saanich, Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Kate died 3 November 1977 at Sandringham Private Hospital, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and was cremated 8 November 1977 at Royal Oak Crematorium, Saanich, Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
