John Henry CUMBERLEGE was born on 24 January 1885 in Deruda, India. He was the son of Henry Owen Cumberlege, Colonel in the Bengal Army, and his wife Emma Evelyn nee Daunt. 

On 31 March 1901 he lived in Hostel of Felstead School, Felstead, Essex, England. On 31 March 1901 he was a Student in Felstead, Essex, England. On 13 February 1904 he was a Gentleman and became a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment. On 27 November 1914 he became a Second Lieutenant in the Cavalry Branch of the Indian Army. On 27 November 1915 he was a Lieutenant Indian Army Reserve of Officers. He became Captain in the Indian Army Cavalry on 27 November 1918. On 18 May 1929 he lived in Gil Gil Nairobi Kenya Colony, South Africa, Africa where he was accidentally killed.

He died on 18 May 1929 in Nakyry near Nairobi, Kenya, Africa. He had his estate probated on 19 November 1929 in London, England. CUMBERLEGE John Henry of Gil Gil Nairobi Kenya Colony South Africa died 18 May 1929 at Nakyry near Nairobi Probate London 19 November [1929] to Laura Florence CAMPBELL (wife of Alexander Colin Cazalet CAMPBELL). Effects £1,195 8s 9d.

John Henry Cumberlege was born on 24 Jan 1885 in Deruda, India - son of Major (later Colonel) Henry Owen Cumberlege (subsequently Commandant, 33rd Regt of Bengal Infantry, Delhi, 1887).

John Henry Cumberlege attended Felsted School; and was later 2Lt 4/Cheshires (Militia), 1904-5. To India - probably Darjeeling - as Asst tea traders Cresswell & Co., Calcutta. Two years Vols service as Trooper, North Bengal Mounted Rifles. 

1914 commission into the Indian Army Reserve of Officers (Cavalry); attd., however, to the Supply and Transport Corps.

1914-15 Star (not shown on his Medal Index Card), as 2Lt., IARO (S&T C). Lieut., Jan 1916.

Captain (British War and Victory Medals). Third Afghan War - appropriate: his father had the Afghan War Medal 1878-9 - Indian General Service Medal GVR clasp Afghanistan NWF 1919 (Capt., S. & T. C.).

Released IARO ca. 1922. Oct 1923 voyage London - South Africa. May 1929, at Gil Gil, Kenya (White Highlands). accidentally killed 18 Nov 1929 and buried near Nairobi, Kenya.
