Albert Henry Cumberpatch was born St Edmunds, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England on 5 September 1900. He was the eldest son of Henry John Cumberpatch and his wife Frances Annie nee Smith. On reaching 18 years of age he enlisted in the Reserve 18th Battalion of the London Regiment. He was discharged as being medically unfit for service suffering from "D.A.H." – Disordered Action of the Heart aka ‘Soldiers’ Heart.’ Albert married Violet M. nee Drage in Northampton in 1927 and they had a son Terence M. Cumberpatch born in Northampton in 1927. Albert died in 1981 and his wife died the year before him.
