Arthur Cumberbirch was the only son of Arthur Cumberbirch and his wife Mary Ann nee Hather. Arthur was born in 1897 in Ecclesall, Sheffield in Yorkshire, England. At the age of 13 he was a scholar and running errands for a chemist in Sheffield, Yorkshire.

On 25th May 1915 Arthur landed in France as Acting Corporal 14411 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment but within three months he was dead. Arthur died of his wounds on 5th August 1915; he was 17 years old. Lance Corporal Arthur Cumberbirch died as a result of accidental injuries sustained during bombing instruction.

Arthur left his parents and four sisters:

  • Mabel Cumberbirch born 1895
  • Florence Cumberbirch born 1902
  • Nora Cumberbirch born 1908

Arthur is commemorated at grave reference III. A. 1. in the Sailly-Sur-La-Lys Canadian Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
