Arthur Cumberlidge was born on 26 August 1890 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of William Myatt Cumberlidge and his wife Emma nee Herbert.
He first enlisted on 9 November 1914 at Tunstall in Staffordshire, England. He was described as:

He became Private 8932 in the Royal Fusiliers. He soon feel ill with tonsillitis and spent 13 days in the Military Hospital, Western Heights in Dover.
However, he was discharged after serving 62 days with the Royal Fusiliers. The cause of his discharge was his poor eyesight. His eyes were examined on Christmas Day 1914 at the Military Hospital, Western Heights in Dover and his eyesight was described as:
- Bad eyesight
- Myopia
- Astigmatism – right eye 14 yrs
- NOT acquired on service
He was discharged on 9 January 1915 as “Not being likely to become an efficient soldier”.
He was a clerk working in a colliery when he enlisted, for the second time, on 31 August 1915.
He became Private 46063 in the 3rd Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. He served overseas and was discharged as medically unfit for service on 3 May 1918 age 27¾. He was entitled to the British War and Victory Medals and the Silver War Badge.
Arthur married Elizabeth Dayson in 1915 and they had five children together:

- Freda Cumberlidge born 1926
- Thomas A Cumberlidge born 16 September 1928
- Joseph Graham Cumberlidge born 19 May 1932
Arthur died in 1971.
