Barry Stephenson Cumberlege 1891-1970

Major in the Royal Army Service Corps

Barry Stephenson CUMBERLEGE OBE, was the son of Charles Farrington CUMBERLEGE (1851-1929) and Esther Faithfull FLEET (1854-1944). He was born on 5 June 1891 in Jesmond, Northumberland, England. He was baptised on 2 July 1891 in St. George's Church, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England. 

On 31 March 1901 he lived in Albert Street, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, England. Between September 1905 and July 1910 he was educated at Durham School. Between 1910 and 1913 he was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University, Cambridgeshire, England. He was awarded a double blue at Cambridge for rugby and cricket.

On 7 September 1914 he became a Second Lieutenant on probation in the Army Service Corps. On 5 March 1915 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps. On 20 April 1916 he was promoted to Temporary Captain in the Army Service Corps. On 29 November 1917 he was promoted to Captain in the Army Service Corps. On 13 March 1918 he was an Acting Major in the Army Service Corps Special Reserves. 

On 16 March 1919 he was a Captain (Acting Major) and was Mentioned in Despatches of Sir Douglas Haig:

On 18 April 1919 he was a Captain (Acting Major) in the Army Service Corps Special Reserves but relinquishes his Acting Major Rank. 

On 3 June 1919 he was a Captain (Acting Major) Royal Army Service Corps and was awarded the OBE:

On 28 January 1920 he was a Captain (late Acting Major) and resigns his Commission and is granted the rank of Major. On 12 June 1920 he lived in 116 Oakwood Court, Kensington, London, England. On 12 June 1920 he was a Major R.A.S.C. in 116 Oakwood Court. 

Barry married Lovella Louisa GILLIS, daughter of James Gillis, on 12 June 1920 in St Barnabas Church, Kensington, London, England when he was 29 and she was 30. The marriage was witnessed by Duncan Spencer CUMBERLEGE and Charles Farrington CUMBERLEGE. He married Phyllis TIDD Q4 1950 in Kensington Registration District, Kensington, London, England. She died Q3 1971 in Folkestone Registration District. On 5 May 1959 he was an Underwriter. On 22 September 1970 he lived in 5 Balfour Court, Folkestone, Kent, England. On 22 September 1970 he was a Non-Underwriting Member of Lloyds. He died on 22 September 1970 in Folkestone Registration District, Kent, England.
