Cecil Francis Cumberlege CBE 1885-1975

Lieutenant 1st Dragoon Guards

Cecil Francis CUMBERLEGE CBE was the son of Francis Henry CUMBERLEGE (1855-1955) and Frances LUARD (1856?-1946). He was born on 13 September 1885 in Calcutta, Bengal, India. He was baptised on 10 October 1885 in Calcutta. 

He married Maud Douglas BARCLAY in Q2 1907 in Kensington, London, England.  Maud Douglas BARCLAY and Cecil Francis CUMBERLEGE had the following children:

•   Joyce CUMBERLEGE (1908- ).   Joyce was born in 1908 in Wimbledon, Surrey, England. On 2 April 1911 she lived in Kensington.
•   Margaret CUMBERLEGE (1909-1985).   Margaret was born on 20 September 1909 in Wimbledon. She was baptised on 6 November 1909 in Wimbledon. On 2 April 1911 she lived in Shiplake, Oxfordshire, England. She died Q2 1985 in Worthing Registration District, Worthing, Sussex, England.

On 1 April 1910 he was a Second Lieutenant 5th Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment. On 2 April 1911 he was an out of work Tea Clerk in Kensington.  On 20 December 1911 was in the 5th Battalion, The East Surrey Regiment and he resigns his commission.  On 7 November 1914 he was a Second Lieutenant Reserve Regiment Cavalry. On 30 December 1914 he was a Second Lieutenant moving from 1st Reserve Regiment of Cavalry, to be Second Lieutenant (on probation) in the 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards. On 14 December 1915 he was a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Dragoon Guards – Cavalry.  

He married Elizabeth Margurite MAUREL Q1 1917 in St Martin Registration District, London, England. Elizabeth Margurite MAUREL and Cecil Francis CUMBERLEGE had the following children:

•   Anne CUMBERLEGE (1918- ).   Anne was born in 1918.
•   Francis CUMBERLEGE (1921- ).   Francis was born in 1921.

On 9 February 1919 he was a 1st Dragoon Gds. and he relinquishes his commission on account of ill-health and retained the rank of Lieutenant.  On 10 June 1954 he was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Adviser on Tea to the Ministry of Food. On 3 September 1955 he was a Tea Broker. He died Q2 1975 in Blyth Registration District, Suffolk, England.
