Edward Cumberlidge was born on 10 May 1878 in Walcote, Lutterworth in Leicestershire, England. He was the son of Thomas Cumberlidge and his wife Ruth nee Everton.
After a short period as a bricklayer’s labourer and carman Edward became a career sailor in the Royal Navy. Between 28 October 1907 and 27 October 1928 he served as a stoker on numerous ships. He rose to become Chief Stoker 312280 in the Royal Navy.
Edward married Eleanor Annie Cook on 2 August 1908 in St Stephen’s Church, Hounslow, London, England. They had a daughter Florence Eileen Cumberlidge born 1912. Eleanor Annie Cumberlidge died as a result of childbirth in 1912.
Edward married Harriet Ann Wright in 1919.
In 1939, aged 61, he was a Fitter’s Mate on HMS Kestrel. Edward died in 1958 and his second wife Harriet Ann Cumberlidge died in 1973.
