Eric Charles Warner CUMBERLEGE was the son of Archibald Farrington CUMBERLEGE O.B.E. (1870?-1945) and Beatrice Marguerite WARNER (1879?-1947). He was born on 8 August 1899 in Calcutta, India. On 2 April 1911 he was a Scholar in Dursley, Gloucestershire, England.
On 21 August 1918 he was a Gentlemen Cadet, from the Royal Military College and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal West Surrey (The Queen's) Regiment. On 21 February 1920 he was an Infantry Royal West Surrey Regiment 2nd Lt. E. C. W. Cumberlege to be Lieutenant.
