Ernest George Cumberlidge was born in 1894 in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of Walter Cumberlidge and his wife Rebecca Lydia nee Berrington. He joined the Royal Field Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant and was promoted to Lieutenant on 28 April 1918. On 6 November 1918 he was awarded the Croix de Guerre by France.

Ernest George Cumberlidge married Hilda Ford Hollinshead in 1922.
