Frank Cumberlidge was born on 17 December 1890 in Leek, Staffordshire, England. He was the youngest son of William Cumberlidge and his wife Elizabeth Jane nee Atkins. He enlisted into the 5th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment becoming Private 5261. He later became Provate 201627 before being discharges as medically unfit for war service on 26 April 1918.

He married Winifred Owen in 1919 and they had a daughter Winifred Joyce Cumberlidge born in 1921. Winifred died in 1960 and Frank died in 1965.
