Frederick Cumberlidge was born on 9 August 1892 in St Paul's, Coventry in Warwickshire, England. He was the son of John George Cumberlidge and his wife Amy nee Lord.

On 20 September 1910 and at the age of 18 Frederick joined the 7th Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment Territorial Force for a period of four years service. He was a slotter working for Bretts Company and living at 2 Cobden Terrace, Coventry in Warwickshire, England. He became Private 1285.

He completed his preliminary training within a year of joining the army and completed his annual training each subsequent year. He was embodied on 5 August 1914 and became Lance Corporal on 31 October 1914 and was confirmed to the rank of Corporal on 17 March 1915. On 22 March 1914 he arrived in France with the British Expeditionary Force and became entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He was discharged on 13 October 1915 after serving five years in the arm and he was described on discharge as:
