Private 37673 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment
Joseph Cumberbirch was born in Wigan, Lancashire, England in Q2 1886. He was the son of Thomas Cumberbirch, and who was also known as Cumberberch and Cumberbatch, and his wife Mary Ann nee Cox. By 1901 he was a colliery boy working in a mine in Wigan.
Joseph was living at 13 Deat Street, Wigan when he enlisted in the army on 9 April 1917 at Wigan and became Private 37673 in the 3rd Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

His medical examiner on enlistment observed that he had “eczema & blepharitis”. Blepharitis is a common eye condition characterized by often chronic inflammation of the eyelid, generally the part where eyelashes grow. It generally presents when very small oil glands near the base of the eyelashes don't function properly, resulting in inflamed, irritated, itchy, and reddened eyelids. Joseph Was under constant treatment since he joined his unit. Although his condition improved it was regarded as incurable my a Medical Board on 20 Feb 1918. The Medical Board observed: The infected parts are his beard, his eyebrows & eyelashes. He is only a menace to others with whom he is apt to come into contact, & is consequently unfit for further military service.
Joseph served at Home 9 Apr 1917 to 31 May 1918 and his service towards engagement to 31 May 1918 totalled 1 years 50 days.
He was invalided out of the army due to Sycosis. Sycosis is an inflammation of hair follicles, especially of the beard area. Joseph was granted a pension of Weekly allowance 5/6 a week for 25 weeks starting on 1 June May 1918 and running to 26 November 1918

Essential facts: His M.H.S. [Medical History Sheet] states that he had “eczema & blepharitis” when he enlisted. [Blepharitis is a common eye condition characterized by often chronic inflammation of the eyelid, generally the part where eyelashes grow. Examined by No. 4 T.M.B. 20 Feb 1918 & placed in Cat E.
