There were three children of the marriage:

Corrections [JBMHS Vol: IX p200 No 4 August 1942]
Errata. In the notes on TRENT, CARLETON, and CUMBERBATCH families which were published in the Journal for November 1941, two errors have been noted. On page 50, the record of Sarah Cumberbatch’s marriage should read-Married 1 May 1818, Charles second son of Stephen Cave of Cleve Hill, Gloucestershire. And on the same page it is stated that Lawrence Trent Cave and Lucy, his wife, had issue two daughters. In fact, there were three daughters of the marriage.

    • Edward Carleton Cumberbatch was 26 years old and the only son of Edward Carleton Cumberbatch. He became a very eligible bachelor when his father died in 1821. His father owned the Ebworth Plantation, half of the St Nicholas Abbey plantation in St Peter, Barbados along with his two brothers Lawrence Trent Cumberbatch and John Trent Cumberbatch and other property in Barbados.

Nearing death Edward Carleton Cumberbatch wrote his will on 13 July 1821 unusually leaving his property in the trust of his two brothers for a period of five years on the condition that his son, Edward, did not marry any daughter of Andrew Ashe, a musician of Bath, during these five years. If he did then he would inherit just £300 per year for his life and the estate would pass to Edward's sister Sarah Cave nee Cumberbatch. Edward died 1 August 1821 and his will was proved on 18 February 1822.

Andrew Ashe and his wife were accomplished musicians. Andrew became an accomplished flute player and his wife was a singer. Andrew became the Director of the Bath and Bristol concerts which he conducted with great skill for twelve years from 1810 to 1822. However, after losing a considerable sum of money in the last four years of his direction he was forced to give it up in 1822. Andrew's perilous financial situation was of concern to Edward's father and this no doubt led to the condition in Edward's will.

Edward resisted until 6 August 1822 when he married Mary Gertrude Honoria ASHE the daughter of Andrew ASHE, a musician.

The St Nicholas Abbey estate passed to Edward's sister Sarah Cumberbatch who had married Charles Cave in 1818. The estate remained in the Cave family until 2004 when its owner Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Cave died and it was put up for sale. The estate consisted of St Nicholas Abbey, 400 acres of land, an old sugar mill, syrup factory and the remnants of two windmills. The sale guide price was $7,000,000 or £4,400,000.

Would you give up your inheritance for love? [40]

    • Died leaving 5 children. [11]
    • Lawrence Trent Cumberbatch, M.D. St. Andrews, M.R.C.P. Lond., M.R.C.S.Eng., died August 18th [1889], at the age of sixty-five. He was born at Barbadoes, where his father owned an estate. Early inclination led him to the study of medicine, and at the age of sixteen he entered as a student at Trinity College, Dublin, where he took the degree of B.A. in 1846. After this he studied for some time in Paris, and then, in 1848, took the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, not being able to afford the time necessary to graduate in medicine. He next became assistant to a practitioner at Chipping Norton, who had an extensive practice, and held several appointments, including a large Union. By laborious work in this position he gained extensive experience both in obstetrics and in general medicine and surgery.
His first commencement of practice in London was decided by an accident. A nomination for a commission as assistant-surgeon in the army had been obtained for him; he had resigned his appointment, and had come up to London to present himself at the War Office. It was then found that his diploma of M.R.C.S. Eng. could not for the moment be produced, his uncle to whose care he had entrusted it being out of town, and thus his commission was lost. In this dilemma he decided to commence practice near Lowndes Square; and, having influential relations and friends at the West End, he soon began to attain success.
Eventually he decided to give up general practice, and limit himself to obstetric and medical work as a physician. Accordingly, in 1866 he took the degree of M.D. at St. Andrews, and the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of London. His inclination for obstetric practice was much encouraged by three influential friends, all having large and fashionable midwifery practices, the late Sir Charles Locock, Dr. Cape, and Dr. Cream. All these availed themselves frequently of his obstetric skill; and thus it happened that before long Dr. Cumberbatch himself was in the full tide of a large obstetric practice among the upper classes at the West End.
His great success was the more remarkable from the fact that the only public appointment he ever held was that of physician to the Economic Life Insurance Office, which he retained up to the time of his death. It was due to his own talent, industry, and professional skill. A writer in the 'Lancet' says, "Only those who have had the advantage of meeting him in consultation can know how valuable was his opinion; how thoroughly honest and straightforward he was, and of what comfort and support in difficult and complicated cases. To his patients he endeared himself by his sympathy, as well as by his success in treating them. In addition to being a good classical scholar he was well read in subjects apart from his profession, and was always thoroughly versed in the topics of the day. As a host or at a dinner party he was delightful, and those who have met him know what an acquisition he was, full of amusing anecdote and sparkling humour." Dr. Cumberbatch was elected a Fellow of our Society in 1862, was a Member of Council from 1868 to 1870, and was Vice-President in 1878.
Dr. Cumberbatch had had a warning about seven years before, discovering that his pulse had suddenly fallen to about 40 in the minute. Acting on the advice of medical friends whom he consulted, he then gave up his midwifery practice, and limited himself to consulting and medical work. Nevertheless he remained fully occupied with the work which now fell to his share as a general physician. After a busy season he left London on the night of August 16th [1889] to join his cousin's yacht in Scotland. With the exception of some fatigue he appeared well on his arrival. On Sunday, 18th, at breakfast, he appeared in his usual spirits. Soon afterwards he was seized with severe pain, which at first he attributed to indigestion, but which was evidently angina pectoris. He remarked that he had had a slight attack of the same kind the previous Sunday. The pain increased, and in less than half an hour from the moment of seizure he died.

      LAWRENCE TRENT CUMBERBATCH, M.D. ST.ANDREWS, M.R.C.P.LOND.
THE BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL. [Sept. 14, 1889 pp628-9]

The sudden death of Dr. L. T. Cumberbatch on August 18th, which we announced in a recent issue, has caused a widespread feeling of regret both in metropolitan professional circles and throughout a large section of the public in the West End of London. A few particulars as to the fatal attack and an account of his life and character, for which we are indebted to an intimate friend of the deceased gentleman, himself a man of the highest eminence in the profession, will no doubt be interesting to many of our readers.

Dr. Cumberbatch had attended on the Friday previous to his death at the Economic Life Office, of which he was physician, and appeared, to those who saw him, to be in his usual health, and discharged his duties on that day without any trouble or fatigue. He left town on the same evening for Scotland for a few days yachting with some friends, prior to a proposed longer absence on the Continent. On the Saturday after his arrival at his destination he appeared in every respect well, though perhaps somewhat
fatigued with the night journey. On the Sunday morning at breakfast his friends did not observe the slightest evidence of any coming change, and he was in his usual good spirits. But soon after this he was seized with severe pain in the chest. He had complained of a slight attack of a similar character some days previously, and this he had attributed to indigestion. But the pain became very severe, and within half an hour of its onset he ceased to breathe.

Some few of his professional friends who were intimate with him were not quite unprepared for this sudden termination of the life of one so universally beloved by all who knew him, and who, to the day of his departure from town, was full of life and energy.

Some few years back Dr. Cumberbatch discovered that his pulse had suddenly fallen to forty in the minute. On this occasion, in consultation with some of his professional friends, he was strongly advised at once to lessen work-to avoid all night work-and consequently to give up active attendance on midwifery cases, and only to practise in this department in consultation; for of midwifery practice he had a larger share than most men at the West End, and this work had told on him. He followed this advice; but, nevertheless, his energy and activity were called into full action by the large amount of private practice which now fell to his share as a general physician. Indeed, to the last week of his residence in town he was as much occupied as he well could be, and he longed for a holiday and change of air.

Dr. Cumberbatch, who was, we believe, the son of a clergyman residing in the neighbourhood of London, studied at Trinity College, Dublin, where, in 1846, he took his B.A. degree. He next applied himself to the study of medicine, first at Dublin and afterwards in Paris for a short time. In 1848 he became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He next worked as assistant with a medical practitioner at Chipping Norton, and here it was he acquired that sound practical knowledge which, aided by zeal, good sense and judgment, and quick appreciation of all the general indications of mischief or disease, rendered Lawrence Cumberbatch one of the most judicious and soundest practitioners in every department of his more special line of practice.

He was to have entered the army as an assistant-surgeon, and an appointment was obtained for him with this object, but it was not to be. The then Director-General of the Army Medical Department refused to appoint him, as his diploma of the College could not at the time be produced, and so, fortunately for him, and for many others who subsequently benefited by his skill and advice, he decided to try his professional fortune in London. He had relations and connections of good position in the West End, and in a short time he was able to feel that his success was by no means uncertain, These satisfactory results soon made it desirable that he should assume a higher grade in the profession; accordingly, in 1886, he took the M.D. degree at St. Andrews, and was admitted a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

The late Sir Charles Locock influenced him largely as regards taking up midwifery as the chief department of his practice. The late Dr. Cape and Dr. Gream were also fully alive to the great skill and good judgment of Dr. Cumberbatch in all cases of difficult labour, and learnt that he was implicitly to be trusted under all circumstances when either of them had occasion to be absent. So his work increased, and with it the general as well as the professional estimate of the worth and ability of him whom we now have to mourn, and of whom the writer of these few lines can only speak with the greatest feeling of regret, and with the highest appreciation of his excellent qualities, professional and general.

Dr. Cumberbatch was very largely occupied for many years in extensive practice, chiefly amongst the upper classes of society in the West End of London. His success was due to his talent, industry, honesty, and to his gentlemanlike and strictly honourable conduct throughout a long professional career. He was well read, and a good scholar. He was generous-minded in every sense of the expression; liberal in his charities, hospitable in his social life, full of anecdote and pleasant conversation, and in every respect a most sincere, most trustworthy friend. We need not draw aside the curtain of his happy married life. He leaves a widow to mourn the loss of a devoted husband, and two daughters and three sons that of a fond and attached father. He died in his 66th year.
