Henry was born on 25 May 1879 in Rudyard, near Leek, in Staffordshire, England. He was the son of William Cumberlidge and his wife Sarah nee Dobson.

Henry initially joined the Army Militia on 17 September 1901 and served as Private 5907 in the 3rd Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment for three months before joining the regular army on 2 November 1901. On enlistment Henry was described as:

On 2 November 1901 Henry became Private 6567 in the 2nd Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment and signed up for seven years service in the colours and five years in the reserve. On enlistment in the regular army Henry was described as:

On 1 April 1904, when stationed at Dagshai in India, Henry agreed to increase his service in the army to eight years in the colours. After completing 12 years service in the army with over six years served in India Henry was discharged on 1 November 1913 with over 8 years Army service contributing to his army pension.

Henry joined the Royal Garrison Artillery during WW1 serving as Gunner 93433. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals.

Henry married Kate Stonehewer in 1917 in Leek, Staffordshire, England. Together they had a son Thomas Henry Cumberlidge born 21 February 1923 in Leek, Staffordshire, England.

Henry died in 1956 and his wife Kate Cumberlidge nee Stonehewer died in 1960.
