Herbert Cumberlidge 1883-1963

Private 13583 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment

Herbert Cumberlidge was born 23 August 1883 in Pitts Hill, Tunstall in Staffordshire, England. He was the son of John Cumberlidge and his wife Ann nee Inskeep.

Herbert was working as a glost placer in a pottery factory in 1901.

Herbert married Eliza Webb in 1905 and together they had five children:

  • John Thomas Cumberlidge, born 1908
  • Herbert Cumberlidge, born 1910
  • Evelyn Cumberlidge, born 1913
  • Samuel Webb Cumberlidge, born 1915

Herbert joined the 7th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment. He became private 13583. Herbert arrived in the Balkans in the very same year that his youngest son Samuel Webb Cumberlidge was born, 1915. Herbert was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals. He was discharged to the Army Reserve on 1 June 1919.

Herbert returned to the pottery industry ad in 1939 was working as a glost placer in a pottery factory. Herbert died in 1963 and his wife Eliza had died in 1940.
