John Edward Cumberlidge Cook in the Merchant Navy during WW1

John Edward Cumberlidge was a cook in the merchant navy during WW1. He was awarded the Mercantile Marine and British War Medals.

John was born on 2 July 1895 at 12 Daniel Street, Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He was the eldest son of John Cumberlidge, a print compositor, and his wife Jane Maria nee Carter.

John continued to serve on ships. Following WW1 war service the RMS Cedric was returned to her owner in September 1919 and refitted by Harland & Wolff. She was refitted to accommodate 347 first-, 250 second- and 1000 third-class passengers. She resumed Liverpool–New York voyages. On 30 September 1923, Cedric collided with the RMS Scythia of the Cunard Line in Queenstown (Cobh) harbour during dense fog. Neither vessel was seriously damaged. It is likely that John Edward was its cook at the time of this collision.

John married Gertrude Gladys Minshull in 1924 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Together they had:

  • Dorothy G Cumberlidge born 1925 in Liverpool
  • Mavis M Cumberlidge born 1934 in Liverpool

By 1939, they were living in Blackpool, Lancashire, England where John was a chef.

John died on 26 March 1979 and his wife died 10 years before him.
