James Cumberledge 1889-1967 Guardsman 3154 Welsh Guards
James Cumberledge was born on 23rd February 1889 in Collierley, County Durham, England and was only 18 months old when his mother Jane Renwick nee Stoker died. As James neared two years of age his father Alexander Cumberledge married again. Alexander married Elizabeth Errington on 16 February 1892 in St Matthew & Parish Church, Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland, England. James' father was a grocer running his own business and James helped his father and became a grocer and provisions merchant.
James father died on 11 April 1914 and James enlisted in the Army at Blaydon on 26 January 1916 and was placed into the reserves. James was mobilised in Newcastle upon Tyne and joined the Welsh Guards as Guardsman 3154 on 25 September 1916. He was given a medical examination at Newcastle Barracks and was described as:

He was immediately posted to the Guards Depot at Caterham in Surrey on 27 September 1916. James served in England from 26 Jan 1916 to 13 March 1917. James was witnessed 'interfering with fruit trees' on private property on 4th Jul 1917 and was confined to camp for one week.
James joined the British Expeditionary Force in France from 14 March 1917 to 27 Feb 1918. He returned to the UK for a short holiday between 12th to 26th February 1918. However, he sprained his right ankle and was admitted to hospital on 27 February 1918 and spent 42 days in the Bevan Military Hospital in Sandgate, Kent. He then spent 66 days in the Military Convalescent Hospital in Eastbourne recovering from his injury. A month after being released from hospital he was admitted to Rochester Row, Military Hospital in London on 16 July 1918 suffering with Gonorrhoea. He spent 42 days in hospital. He returned to the British Expeditionary Force in France from 10 September 1918 to 11 March 1919 and returned to the UK on 12 Mar 1919 until he was discharged to the reserves on 23 April 1919. He was discharged on Demobilization on 31st March 1920.
James was entitled to the Victory and British War Medals.
James married Jan Ann Rutherford in 1921 and they had four children:

- Gladys Cumberledge born 1 Dec 1928
James died in 1867 and his wife Jane Ann predeceased him in 1952.
