James Percival Cumberlidge was born 31 July 1895 in Jhansi, India.

James Percival Cumberlidge joined the 1st Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment at the start of World War One. He landed with the British Expeditionary Force in France on 22 August 1914 and the next day is the first day that the British Army engaged with the German Army at Mons in France. The British were overrun and James was taken as a prisoner of war on 26 August 1914. James later joined the Dorset Regiment as Private 47089.

James married Emily Yapp in 1919 and they had three children:

James died in 1943 and his wife remarried. She married William S Wilkinson in 1951.
