John Barton Cumberlidge 1889-1974

John Barton Cumberlidge was born 9 October 1889 in Tonge near Middleton in Lancashire, England. He was the eldest son of George William Cumberlidge and his wife Eliza nee Spiller.
He was a piecer in a cotton mill by 1911 and a cotton spinner by the time he married Sarah Hannah Watson in 1915. They had four children:
- Ronald Cumberlidge, born 1916
- Nellie Cumberlidge, born 1918
- Edythe M Cumberlidge, born 1920
- Jack Cumberlidge, born 1922
John Barton Cumberlidge joined as Yeoman 110545 in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry and later transferred into the Lancashire & Cheshire Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 362991. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
John was a Wholesalers Salesman Traveller for a General Merchants by 1939 and his son Ronald as a postman. John died in 1974 and his wife had died in 1966.
