Joseph Cumberbatch was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England in 1898. On 24 June 1919 he enlisted in the army and became Private 30327 1/5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment. He transferred to the 30th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment and became Private 101074. He was discharged after serving a few months as being unfit for duty. He was discharged on 11th October 1919.
He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and Silver War Badge number B3818383.
He married Margaret Ashton in 1920 in Bolton, Lancashire. Together they had:

Joseph died in Bolton, Lancashire in 1959. His widow Margaret Cumberbatch married Robert Berry in 1962 at the Fletcher Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Bolton, Lancashire, England.
