Richard Barton Cumberlidge was born on 24 July 1893 in Tonge, Middleton in Lancashire, England. He was the second son of George William Cumberlidge and his wife Eliza nee Spiller. He was a piecer in a cotton mill in Lancashire in 1911.

Richard enlisted in the army on 12 October 1914 and joined as Gunner 45797 in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He served in Egypt and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals. He was discharged on 24 August 1817 due to being unfit for war service due to sickness. He was additionally awarded the Silver War Badge, number 228829.

Shortly after being discharged from the army Richard married Alice Munro in 1917 and they had three children:

Between 1928 and 1921 Richard was a fireman and trimmer in the merchant navy. He was described as:

  • Height: 5’ 7”
  • Colour Hair: Light Brown
  • Eyes: Brown
  • Tattoo Marks: Scar at tip of Right forefinger. Scar under lower lip.

Richard was working as a company promoter at Underwood Kennels in Bonnybridge in Sterlingshire in Scotland in 1928 and was declared bankrupt. Richard died in 1930 in Ayr in Scotland.
