Private 585 1st Battalion British West Indies Regiment

Samuel Cumberbatch was born in Canehall, St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean. He joined the 1st Battalion of the British West Indies Regiment as Private 585. His British War and Victory medals were unclaimed after the war but they were claimed in 1934. The address recorded on his medal card is 533 Venderbilt Ave, Brooklyn, New York. He arrived in the USA aboard the Caraquet on 31st August 1920. He was 34 years and 10 months old and therefore born around October 1885. However, other records suggest that his age should have been 24, not 34, so born in 1895.

Samuel married Mary L in 1923 and they lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA. See them in the 1930 US Census. They had atleast two children:

• Ethel M Cumberbatch born about 1924
• James H Cumberbatch born in 1929

Samuel died in May 1971 aged 76.
