Thomas Cumberbatch was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England in 1867. He was the youngest son of Richard Cumberbatch and his wife Jane nee Nuttall. He worked as a Moulder's Labourer in 1891, as a Labourer on Brick Ground in 1901 and as a Hawker of Green Grocery in 1911. He married Rosa Milliner nee Knott in Holy Trinity, Bolton-Le-Moors, Lancashire, England on 30 September 1893. She was a widow with a son Albert Harold Milliner born in Bolton in 1890. He had previously served in the army in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment when he enlisted as Private 6493 in the 5th Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. He lied about his age when he enlisted at Bolton on 26 August 1915. He was described as:

He served for 7 months but not overseas and was of "good" military character. He was discharged at Blackpool on 7th April 1916. He was found by a Medical Board, where he revealed his real age of 47, on 29 March 1916 to be Medically Unfit due to deafness. His deafness started about 1886 in Bolton. His deafness was not a result of and not aggravated by Military Service but it was permanent. He had no incapacity. He was awarded £15 and pensioned off.
Thomas died in 1939 and his wife Rosa died the same year.
