Thomas Cumberbirch was born in August 1890 in Wigan, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Richard Cumberbirch, who was also known with the surname spellings of as Cumberberch and Cumberbatch, and his wife Mary Jane nee Connor. He was a coal miner by 1911.
