Thomas 'Tom' Cumberlidge 1896-1916

Thomas 'Tom' Cumberlidge was born in Q2 1896 in St John's Parish, Derby, Derbyshire, England. He was the eldest son of George Cumberlidge by his second wife Mary Ann nee Weston but widowed as Mary Ann Buxton. Tom was apprenticed as a Blacksmith to Mr Coles located in Derby, Derbyshire.
Tom enlisted in the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment – The Sherwood Foresters on 29 March 1912 at Derby. He became Private 1547 and joined the 5th Battalion. He was medically examined and described as:

At the onset of World War One Tom embarked at Southampton on 26 February 1915 and arrived at Le Havre on 27 February 1915. On the 2 March 1916 he was attached to a machine gun section. Tom was promoted to Lance Corporal in the Machine Gun Section on 7 June 1916 but was killed in action shortly afterwards on 1st July 1916.
