William James Cumberbatch was born in Bethnal Green, London, England on 11 February 1898. He was the eldest son of William Brown Cumberpatch and his wife Annie Florence nee Salmon. He was baptised at St John's Church, Bethnal Green, London, England on 13 March 1898.

William James, a tobacconist's assistant for Mr J Ferrand of 258 Green Street, Forest Gate, London, England, enlisted in the army becoming Private 424359 in the 10th London Regiment on 7 June 1916. Between 23 August 1917 and 28 August 1918 he served in France. He was suffered a bullet wound to his right shoulder on 27 August 1918 and he received treatment at Whipps Cross Hospital, Leytonstone; VAD Hospital Burnham on Crouch. He was left with a scar about 2” long at the base of neck above his right scapular and he was not able to wear equipment on account of the scar. His hand was weak.

William James Cumberpatch married Agnes Rosina Allen Q2 1929 in West Ham. They had:
