Richard George Cumberlidge was born 21 May 1883 in Hydes Pastures in Warwickshire, England. He was the son of Thomas Cumberlidge and his wife Mary Ann nee Chamberlain.
By 1901 he was working in a cotton mill where he continued to work until he joined the army. He joined the army as Gunner 119565 in the Royal Field Artillery and he was commissioned 27 October 1916.
Richard married Ellen Turner in 1909 and they had seven children:

- Edwin Cumberlidge, born 1915
- William Cumberlidge, born 1917
- Norman Cumberlidge, born 1920
- Kenneth Cumberlidge, born 1921

Richard died in 1958.
