Ernest Cumberbirch was born 27 Sep 1893 at 77 Henry Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England. He was the eldest son of Ernest Cumberbirch and his wife Ellen nee Farrell.
In addition to the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals Ernest was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the Field.

His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Military Medal for bravery in the Field to the undermentioned Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and men : —

The National Roll of the Great War, 1914-1918

CUMBERBIRCH, E., Pte., 2nd Loyal N. Lancs. Regt. He volunteered in August 1914, and in January 1915 proceeded to France, where he was in action at Armentieres, Bullecourt, Ypres, Passchendaele, the Somme, Cambrai, and in the 1918 Retreat and Advance. He was wounded at Havrincourt in September 1918, and was demobilised in the following year. Shortly afterwards he re-enlisted for a further period of service, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

Ernest Cumberbirch married Lena Daulby in Q1 1919 in Manchester Registration District, Lancashire, England. Together they had:
