William George Cumberpatch was born 11 Jul 1885 in Horfield, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. He was the eldest son of Edward Arthur Cumberpatch and his wife Amy Myrtle nee Prowse. He was baptised at Knowle, Holy Nativity, Gloucestershire, England on 16 August 1885. William George was educated at Colstons Endowed Schools, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. William George Cumberpatch was a Clerk for Mssrs John Lysaght & Co based in Bristol, when he volunteered for the 1st Gloucestershire Royal Garrison Artillery Volunteers on the 16th February 1905. He became Gunner 5718.
