Herbert Cumberlidge was born 7 May 1898 in Middleton, Lancashire, England. He was the eldest son of Samuel Cumberlidge and his wife Emma nee Turner.

Herbert became Rifleman 235377 in 4th Battalion of the King's Liverpool Regiment when he enlisted on 10 May 1916.He was discharged from the 4th Battalion due to being physically unfit for war service due to wounds suffered whilst overseas. He was discharged on 7 March 1919. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals and the Silver War Badge.

Herbert married Doris Kilner in 1921 and they did not have any children.

Herbert died in 1978 and his wife Doris died in 1965.
