b. Berdiansk (Russia), 27 June 1858; s. of late R.W. Cumberbatch of H.M.’s Consular Service; m. Helene Gertrude, d. of late T.B. Rees of Smyrna, 1891; three s. two d. Educ.: Christ College, Finchley. Student Dragoman, Constantinople, 1876; employed at Belgrade, 1876-78; appointed H.M.’s Vice-Consul Bucharest, 1879; H.M.’s Vice-Consul Soulina (Roumania (sic)), 1881; Consul Adrianople, 1888; Acting Consul-General, Philippopolis (Bulgaria), 1888 and 1890; Acting Consul-General, Salonica, 1891; Acting Consul-General, Smyrna 1892; transferred to Angora, 1893; was at Erzeroum (Kurdistan) during the massacres of Armenians at that place, 1895; Consul for Kurdistan, 1895-1896. Consul at Smyrna, 1896-1900; was also British Post Office Agent; Consul-General, 1900-8.

Decorated for services rendered in Asia Minor, etc.
