Sydney Cumberbatch was born in Trinidad and was the son of Helena Clarke. He joined the 1st Battalion of the British West Indies Regiment as Private 6910. He was died at the 26 Casualty Clearing Station in Egypt on the 1st January 1918. His grave is located at E86 in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
